Cheese alert, and a storage question

February 2, 2009

Is the price of cheese still a big issue?

If so, I see that New World has 1kg blocks for $9.

Dear readers, can you stockpile cheese? Will it freeze ok? Answers, please.

  1. New World here certainly doesn’t have it at that price. oh well.

Yes you can freeze cheese. I am not sure about whole blocks but I used to buy up tasty, grate it in the food processor and freeze it.

  2. Mind didn’t either (ChCh), although it did have Mainland 750g for $7.99 last night. Cheese doesn’t last long enough in our house for freezing!

  3. we usually have about 3-4 blocks sitting in our fridge from times like these. maybe you want to set aside some space in the fridge for cheese?

  4. Click on the link in the post – it’s for “Central Region”. That site does have the specials for other regions if you poke around.

  5. Sue: how long do you take to get through a kilo? How long does the oldest cheese last?

  6. today’s processed cheese is designed for two purposes.

    1. franchise-like consistency of taste and appearance
    2. longevity.

we keep a block in a decent, air-tight container for **weeks**. in the wrapper, as long as it’s kept at the very back of the fridge where the temperature is more stable? a month or more, unopened.

  7. Hmmm – as a family of 5 (2 of them preschoolers) we go through 7oogm block in a little over a week I did try rationing and buying store brands but there was a revolt

  8. ah. that’ll be what they call a “staple” then.

we’re partially dairy-free, which is a hang of a lot cheaper, let me tell you.

  9. You can definitely freeze the cheese – I always buy Budget 1kg tasty (v. good, definitely better than Pams and most of the Anchor,Mainland etc. standard tasty), cut it in half, wrap one half with gladwrap and tinfoil and pop it in the freezer. When the first half is finished, just grab the frozen one and put into the fridge to defrost in time for the next time it is needed 🙂
